Illegal Sump Pump Connections
If your sump pump is connected to the Maple Shade’s Sanitary Sewer System either directly by piping or indirectly via floor drains, toilets, or utility sinks, you have an illegal connection. Illegal connections substantially increase the cost of operating the Maple Shade Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A very conservative estimate indicates that one sump pump connected to the sanitary sewer system typically introduces 216,000 gallons of water in a 90-day period which costs the Maple Shade Wastewater Treatment Plant approximately $1,100.00 to treat. Again, this is just for one sump pump. These additional operating costs are reflected in EVERY RESIDENT’S sewer bill.
Maple Shade Township Code 160-9.1 prohibits any sump pump connection to the sanitary sewer system. Violators are subject to fines. The law allows the Township or its’ representatives to conduct investigations of the sanitary sewer system, as necessary, to locate and identify extraneous flows and illegal connections.
In an effort to reduce costs, Maple Shade Township property owners may contact Maple Shade Utilities at (856) 488-7450 to request an inspection and review of your sump pump connection. If a property owner requests an inspection and an illegal connection is identified, you will not be sited for an illegal connection provided you agree to correct it. If an illegal connection is observed by utility or township inspection personnel at any other time, the property owner will be held accountable.
If you are aware that your sump pump is either directly or indirectly connected to the Maple Shade Sanitary Sewer System, please help us to reduce unnecessary operating cost and eliminate the possibility of being subject to fines and disconnect it from the sanitary sewer system immediately. Your cooperation will reduce operating costs and will be greatly appreciated.
